What do the numbers on a police badge stand for?

I have an old Memphis police badge. It has the #69 on the bottom. Just wondering what it stood for

  1. it's the badge number, used to be a way to identify the officer wearing the badge before they had their little cutesy name tags. looks: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=badge+number&aq=f&oq=
  2. It's just an employee ID number.
  3. Usually, it is their badge number, which specifically identifies a particular officer as an ID number. Not all agencies use them, and not all agencies actually use them as the sole way to identify an officer. I worked for an agency where my badge number and ID number were two different things.
  4. It may be the officer's badge number, or it may the area he was assigned to. A map of Memphis PD shows they have two districts divided into nine precincts, then each precinct is divided into wards. The badge could be the area the officer was assigned. If you wanted to be sure, you could stop by and ask. I'm sure any officer would be interested in seeing the badge, and could probably give you the background behind it. http://www.memphispolice.org/precincts%2004.htm
