How are the police, news, and weather helicopters flying around protected from this strong lightening?

- because the outside metal shell acts as a conductor and the inside acts as an insulator.
- Actually the safest place to be during an electric storm is inside a vehicle, call it helicopter, car, bus, etc. the chassis protects the passengers from receiving the electrical impact of the lightning bolt.
- They aren't protected from it
